Handgun Activities

Looking for some group activities to advance your handgun skills and knowledge? There are several handgun-oriented happenings at SCSA throughout the year to be aware of.

Review the SCSA Calendar for specific dates and times.

NRA Bullseye League

SCSA offers members a chance to compete in an NRA sanctioned Bullseye League, typically running from January through mid-April every year. SCSA Bullseye is a .22 LR semi-automatic handgun event shot at 50 feet on the Indoor Range using NRA specific 50 foot slow, timed, and rapid fire targets. The league consists of 6 matches total to be shot on the participant’s schedule but completed by the league end date.

SCSA offers the traditional NRA one-handed division but also includes a non-sanctioned two-handed division for those more comfortable with that platform.

League practice and match shooting is conducted weekly in groups, at various times, established at the beginning of the season. Organization is conducted by the SCSA Pistol Director in December.

This league is a perfect opportunity to work on, and maintain, your handgun skills during the cold Wyoming winter months. Contact the SCSA Pistol Director via the link at the bottom of this page for more information.

4th Sunday Tactical Skills Practice

4th Sunday Tactical Skills Practice will occur at the SCSA Pistol Pit Complex on the fourth Sunday of May, June, July, August, and September in 2023 (see SCSA Calendar), from 12 PM to 3 PM.

This event will provide participants an opportunity to learn and practice specific skills useful in carrying and shooting a handgun and also tactical rifles (.223 or smaller).

Monthly events will vary as determined by the SCSA RSO directing the event.

Thursday Steel Challange

Steel Challenge practice and matches will be held the first and third Thursday of the month from May through September, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, shooters are encouraged to arrive to participate by at least 5:30 PM.

Practice will occur on the first Thursday, with a sanctioned two-stage USPSA match occurring each third Thursday. See the SCSA SPS USPSA webpage for more information on the matches and Steel Challenge requirements and rules.

Steel Challenge is a fun and simple practical shooting sport. It is a speed shooting competition involving shooting arrays of steel targets while timed. Each stage has five steel plate targets of various sizes set at different distances. There is a designated stop plate which must be shot last in sequence on the stage. This is a fun activity for shooters of all ages and ability, come give it a try.

Centerfire and rimfire handguns are welcome, rimfire rifles may also be used.

Thursday Multigun

Thursday Multigun will be held the second, fourth, and fifth Thursday of the month from May through September, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, shooters are encouraged to arrive to participate by at least 5:30 PM.

Multigun will include centerfire handguns and .223 or smaller caliber rifles, and shotguns on occasion. Emphasis will be on practicing USPSA style stages of all types. See the SCSA SPS USPSA webpage for more information on USPSA requirements and rules and USPSA matches at SCSA.

USPSA is freestyle sport where shooters are given the freedom to decide how they will shoot a stage containing cardboard and/or steel targets, while avoiding no-shoot targets, and dealing with an occasional moving target. All while on the clock.

SCSA Tactical/Practical Tuesdays

Tactical/Practical Tuesdays are a friendly environment where all aspects and topics of firearms and firearm use are discussed and applied in live shooting applications. Emphasis is on developing defensive skill sets with both handguns and carbines.

Tactical/Practical Tuesday may include classroom lectures, videos, and specific shooting training and drills, or both. Wintertime events are usually presented in the SCSA Clubhouse and Indoor Range. The Indoor Range lends itself well to low-light and no-light firearms technique training, both handheld and weapon mounted tactical lights. Once the weather improves the events are typically held at the SCSA Pistol Pit Complex.

This activity runs Tuesday evenings from February through September. Specific times vary, see scheduling on the SCSA Calendar.
